Nail Surgery for Ingrown Toenails

Safe, professional treatment designed to resolve recurring problems

At Peach Podiatry, we provide specialist nail surgery for patients suffering from persistent or severe ingrown toenails. This minor surgical procedure offers a permanent solution to ongoing pain, infection, or discomfort caused by nails that continue to grow into the skin.

What is Nail Surgery?

Permanent correction for troublesome toenails

Nail surgery is a straightforward procedure carried out under local anaesthetic to ensure a pain-free experience. Depending on your needs, we may remove part of the toenail (partial nail avulsion) or, in some cases, the entire nail (total nail avulsion). A chemical called phenol is then applied to the nail bed to prevent the problematic section of the nail from growing back.

When is Nail Surgery Recommended?

What to Expect During the Procedure

Quick, safe, and carried out by an experienced podiatrist

The procedure usually takes around 60 minutes and is performed under a local anaesthetic, ensuring the toe is completely numb. The problematic part of the nail—or the entire nail if necessary—is then carefully removed. To prevent regrowth of the affected section, phenol is applied to the nail bed, and finally, a sterile dressing is placed with full aftercare instructions provided.

Recovery and Aftercare

Helping you heal comfortably and quickly

  • You’ll be able to walk immediately after surgery, though rest is recommended for the remainder of the day.

  • Mild soreness may occur once the anaesthetic wears off, but pain is usually minimal.

  • You will receive aftercare advice and up to three follow-up appointments to monitor healing.

  • Most patients make a full recovery within 4–6 weeks.
